Dorset Road Community Centre now known as “The Bridge” has made fantastic progress in becoming a real community hub for all age groups in 2018.
The Community Centre has successfully applied for a Community Asset Transfer of the facility which was granted by Wigan Council in March 2018. This means it’s been secured for the next 25 years, for use by the residents of Hag Fold and Atherton.
The exterior has been cleaned and all the barbed wire removed from the roof thanks to our local Councillors using Wigan’s Brighter Borough funds. This has transformed the appearance of venue and made it far more inviting for potential users.
All areas in the Centre are now covered by Wi-Fi thanks to funding from the Deal for Communities.
We have a 5 star pay as you feel Community Café open every Tuesday at the Centre between 11.30am and 2.00pm. The kitchen has recently been upgraded with the help of funding from the Deal for Communities, with new crockery, cutlery and table cloths provided by Wigan Age UK.
The famous Hag Fold Morris Dancers have now got a trophy cabinet in the Centre which they have wanted for the past 42 years, this was partly funded by McColl’s and Taylor Drilling Services Limited. It really looks great with all the fantastic trophies won by the dancers in 2018. They won so many that they now need another trophy cabinet, let hope they don’t have to wait another 42 years before they get one.
In addition to the Hag Fold Morris Dancers we have a host of other activities including the Bridge Indoor Bowling Club, Karate, Street Dance, Atherton Arts Group, Craft Group, Sequence Dancing, Tai chi, Men’s Fitness, Young mums group, Youth Club, and hold very successful Summer and Half Term camps run by the Hag Fold Community Committee, in conjunction with the local schools and Wigan Athletic, giving the youths a large variety of activities to take part in, over the school breaks.
Atherton Pre-School Day Care Limited has shown their long-term commitment to the Hag Fold Community by investing over £38,000 of their own money in a new extension on the Centre, to increase the size of the Pre-School which makes it possible for even more families to use their Ofsted Outstanding Nursery in future.
In August we celebrated the contribution made by Susan Marsh in inspiring 17 young people to campaign for a Community Centre and Youth Club on the Hag Fold estate, without her vision we wouldn’t even have a Community Centre. There is a memorial garden to the rear of the Centre as permanent tribute to her contribution to the Community.
In 2019 we hope to make even more improvements by having a new Parking Area in front of the Community Centre and installing a street light on the pathway to the existing Car Park.
