GREEN FLAG AWARD.

The list of winners of the very prestigious Green Flag awards have now been published and once again COLLIERS CORNER has been left off the list, the corner has been awarded a Green Flag every year for many years, including an International Community Green Flag, but,  no recognition has been given to the tremendous work that is being done on Colliers Corner throughout the year by Members of the Gardeners Bowling Club and the Howe Bridge Community Group  WHY NOT ????

GARDENERS BOWLING CLUB

The bowling season has now finished and once again ALL of the Gardeners teams have had a tremendous season, CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who was involved either as playing or non-playing members of any of the teams.

The job of preparing and maintaining the green for next season has already started, Green keepers John Urmston & Keith Wright with help from some of the “ A TEAM “  members,  did a fantastic job this year.  THANKYOU & WELL DONE,  the green was undoubtedly the best green in the league in 2019.

During 2019 the bowling club received a demand for “ NON-DOMESTIC “ Business rates from Wigan MBC but after explanations were given to the council  about what the bowling club do, our financial position and detail of the club Constitution, the rate demand was WITHDRAWN.

HOWE BRIDGE LEISURE CENTRE

Our group has spent quite a bit of time working on the garden at the entrance to the centre recently and the effects are excellent, we have also had three large decorative torches donated and these have been situated near to the centre entrance, these will be the start and centre pieces of  part of one of our 2020 displays.

CHATTERING FIELDS.

John Williams from Wigan MBC brought a team of volunteers  from Wigan Council to Howe Bridge to help us to renovate the Chattering Field site, the volunteers came as part of the Wigan Community Involvement Scheme and with their help we did an excellent job, now, we must continue to keep on top of what needs doing on the site.

THANKYOU JOHN, you and your team did a tremendous job in the right spirit of community cohesion, you are welcome back any time.

Please pass on our thanks to your volunteers, they were AMAZING

COLLIERS CORNER.

The corner has now been re-planted with Winter Plants and should look very seasonal soon, over the past few weeks we have had a few minor problems with vehicles on the corner so, we are hoping to put a fence around the corner to deter people from parking on the corner and using it without permission, the fence will be similar to the fence near to the roadside of the Green Hill, but, possibly not as substantial.

We also plan to create a “ Wild Flower “ area somewhere on the corner and also a couple of rustic shelters  for { Bees, Hedgehogs, Insects, Butterflies Etc }  and the other very varied types of “ wildlife “ that inhabit the corner.

The notice board has also now been re-painted and is ready for winter.

The corner looks AMAZING and hopefully the work that we doing now will ensure that this continues.

We have done lots of Saturday mornings and Tuesday afternoons working around the village and  one of our biggest problems is the disposal of the filled bags of waste that we collect, fortunately Wigan Council have agreed to pick up our rubbish on completion of our sessions, this has been a great help, Thankyou WMBC and please keep it up.

Another MAJOR problem is the lack of volunteers to help us, if you can spare a bit of time, especially on Saturday mornings then PLEASE ring me on  07412 521040.

At present our volunteers on these sessions are from the Howe Bridge Community Group and Atherton Environment Projects.

The problem that we have in the village with Japanese Knotweed will hopefully soon be addressed, Howe Bridge has been put on the list for the next round of weed treatment and this includes knotweed, this will probably take place at the start of the Spring season of 2020.

ST MICHAEL`S CHURCH.

Team Rector the Reverend Reg Sinclair will be looking after St Michael`s church in future following the appointment of the Reverend Tracy Marshall, hopefully Reg will get more involved with the community group which would benefit ALL of Howe Bridge.

The induction of Reverend Tracy Marshall is taking place on Thursday October 3rd, hence the CHANGE OF DATE FOR THE NEXT MEETING OF THE HOWE BRIDGE COMMUNITY GROUP FROM THE 3RD TO THE 10TH OF OCTOBER.

GOOD DEEDS TRUST GUARDIAN ANGELS SCHEME

The “ Have Your Cake & Eat It “ baking competition was a tremendous success with a record numbers of entries and superb quality of the cakes.

CONGRATULATIONS  to the winners and ALL of the entrants, it was an EXCELLENT DAY.

The Luncheon Clubs and Coffee Mornings are becoming very popular with over fifty people coming for lunch in September, following lunch we were given a lesson in basic art and shown how to draw flowers / plants, some of the groups efforts were amazing and worthy of being framed and displayed.

We have attended quite a lot of social and pastoral events during the past few weeks to talk about the Guardian Angels Scheme and the response has been very good, the number of devices we are giving out and also sending out to various parts of the country has risen quite dramatically, the postal lists are growing because of our On-line ordering facility.

One of the event we attended was the “ Recycled Teenagers “ event at the Wigan Youth Zone on September 19th, this was an excellent day with people of all ages given the opportunity to try different activities and also to meet people from ALL of the different Health, Dementia & Age Friendly groups that exist in Wigan, An EXCELLENT DAY.

The Memories Tea Rooms are getting increasingly busier with many more outside groups using the two Community Rooms that are available.

The actual Tea Room  continues to get fantastic feedback and revues and I would recommend that you pay a visit, the quality of the food and service is VERY VERY HIGH and all of the staff apart from one Chef / Manager are UNPAID VOLUNTEERS,

Several of our volunteers who, because of the fantastic training they receive have now gone into full time employment, in some cases for the first time ever.

A TERRIFIC  achievement by Anthony Hughes, our Chef / manager.

For details of the Tea Room opening times and further information, PLEASE ring Anthony on 01942 488381.

REMINDER—The next meeting of the Howe Bridge Community Group { The Bridgers } is on THURSDAY OCTOBER 10TH AT 8-30PM IN THE GARDENERS PUB,

PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF CHANGE OF TIME !!!
