Astley & Tyldesley Update March 2022

Astley & Tyldesley began their 2022 cycle speedway season in fine style, by winning all three matches at Goshen Sports centre on Sunday. On a cold, blustery afternoon, the home Bury side got off to a flying start in the Division 1 match, winning three of the opening six races with maximum scores, to open up a 7 points lead. A&T however settled down and moved into a one point lead at the halfway stage. A&T’s superior fitness paid off in the second half and the visitors pulled away to take a comfortable 94-82 victory. New captain Reece Pollitt raced unbeaten in his six races, with 14 years old Tom Morrissey excelling in the 2nd half of the match.North & Scotland League Division 1 match result

The first four races were close in the Division 2 match, before two A&T heat wins put them six points up at the halfway stage. As in the 1st team match, A&T’s superior fitness paid off in the second half, recording four maximum heat wins to run out convincing 83-64 winners. Tom Morrissey raced unbeaten for A&T, with Duncan Whalley and 11 years old Frank White dropping just one point each to an opponent.

After a two years’ absence, due to the Covid pandemic, there was a welcome return to the Northern Fours and Junior League series. Heckmondwike hosted Round 1 of the 2022 series, on a sunny but cool first day of Spring.

The Fours League match was a closely fought match throughout, with Astley & Tyldesley, Bury, Sheffield and Stockport battling for the lead throughout the 24 heats. Bury’s challenge faded away in the closing stages, as Stockport finished their races on 46 points after heat 22. This set up a last heat decider with both A&T and Sheffield needing a race win to draw level with Stockport. A&T’s Steve Harris led all the way up to the last bend and held off a strong challenge from Sheffield’s Darius Pilas. However, as both riders drifted out, Darren Kent nipped through on the inside to celebrate the consolation of recording the home team’s only race win of the match. Thus, Stockport took the match win, one point ahead of A&T, with Sheffield a further point behind in 3rd place. This was an excellent match and augurs well for the remainder of the six round series.Northern Fours League Round 1 result

There was an excellent turnout of 46 riders for the different categories of the Junior League. This proved to be valuable experience gained for several of A&T’s new riders who were making their first visit to this track. Duncan Whalley was best for A&T, dropping only one point in the u-16s match.

Reece Pollitt took 4th place, after scoring 17 points in the Frank Knight Memorial Trophy meeting at Sheffield on Saturday. World Champion Ben Mould, of Horspath, won the trophy, with a 20 points maximum score. A&T’s Pierce Bacon had a match to forget, scoring 4 points, after collecting two race exclusions.

A&T are running Women and Girls only sessions on Mondays, at 6 pm, as well as their Club sessions, open to everyone, on Tuesdays at 5.30 pm. For further details, visit the club’s website at www.astleycyclespeedway.org.uk

Heckmondwike and Astley & Tyldesley served up an entertaining day of North & Scotland League racing, at a sunny Firth Park on Sunday. The West Yorkshire side made their return to league racing, after a five seasons’ absence, and celebrated the occasion by winning the Division 2 match.

Two inexperienced teams lined up for the Division 2 match, with A&T fielding an entire team of u-16s and younger, against a much older Heckmondwike team. The lead changed hands several times, before the home team scored two late dramatic 7-3 heat wins, to seal the match in the penultimate race. John White made an impressive comeback for A&T, dropping his only point in the last race, with strong support from his younger brother Frank and Duncan Whalley. A more solid scoring Heckmondwike team won a most entertaining match, by 78-72.North & Scotland League Division 2 match result
