|Wigan’s Active Outdoors cycling programme has received a £500 donation to mark National Bike Week and help keep wheels turning across the region.
The contribution from J. Hopkins Contractors, who have been working on the development of the new Robin Park Road cycle way, will help maintain and grow the scheme’s stock of equipment.
Richard Smith, Sports Engagement Officer at Inspiring healthy lifestyles, which manages the Active Outdoors programme, said: “With the bikes now being used three or four times each week, the scheme is really going from strength to strength but this obviously means extra work for us to keep the equipment in quality condition.
“This generous donation will really help towards growing the scheme, helping even more people across the region discover the benefits of cycling and live healthier and happier lives.”
The programme welcomes riders of all abilities, including those who haven’t picked up a bike for years, to join qualified instructors on routes across Wigan and Leigh.
Riders can enjoy the beautiful rural sites of the region while getting active and are supported through free cycle equipment hire for the first 12 weeks.
In partnership with Transport for Greater Manchester, Wigan Council is delivering the cycle way project, which will provide clear and convenient cycling and walking facilities through Saddle Junction linking Marsh Green, Kitt Green and Newtown with Robin Park and Wigan town centre.
It is part of the Cycle Cities project led by TfGM with Department for Transport funding, which aims to improve connectivity for all road users, including cyclists and pedestrians.
Leader of the council, Councillor David Molyneux said: “We’re excited that this innovative project is now taking shape.
“Cyclists will soon be able to reap the benefits of the upgrade as the Robin Park Road element is due to be complete by the end of the month.
“We’re committed to improving transport across the borough for commuters of all kind and appointing contractors that share the same community values as us is really important. It’s great to hear J. Hopkins have engaged with Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles in this way.
“We look forward to the rest of the works beginning and will keep the public updated throughout.”
