Brighter Borough scores again

Cheque presentation to Ince Rose Bridge girls - Brighter Borough

A local girl’s rugby club has been awarded money from the council’s Brighter Borough pot so they can invest in brand new training equipment and kits.

Councillor David Molyneux, new leader of Wigan Council and Councillors Janice Sharratt and Jim Moodie have pulled together to give Ince Rose Bridge rugby club girls’ team an impressive £1,000 to fund training tops, hoodies, equipment and new kits for the players.

Wigan Council launched Brighter Borough as a way for councillors to engage with the community and invest money directly into their wards for events, causes and projects that will benefit their constituents.

And, although the team are fundraising themselves to purchase their desired equipment, the money from their local councillors will help make their plans a reality much sooner.

Lindsey Abram team manager at the club said: “We pride ourselves on trying to fundraise and be self-sufficient but this can sometimes be a slow process and we want to keep the team engaged so we applied for the council funding so we could get new equipment quickly.

“We’re so thankful that the money was granted because the girls look like more of a team now they’re all uniform.

“We’re privileged that our local councillors took the time to show their support.”

Speaking about the money, Councillor David Molyneux said: “Brighter Borough is a fantastic resource for councillors to support their local areas. We receive so many inspiring applications and we’re happy to help fund a range of projects.

“Sport clubs such as Ince Rose Bridge are great because they do much more than just develop a young person’s fitness. They make them part of a community to be proud of and teach life lessons around teamwork that young people can carry with them throughout their lives.

“I hope the team put their new kits on with pride and make the most of their new equipment.”

The club has three teams, U12’s, U14’s and U16’s and are keen to get more local girls involved. They train twice a week on Monday’s and Friday’s and they also run a wrestling group on Wednesday’s at JB Fitness.
