Could you could offer work placements for young people?

GMCVO has partnered with The Growth Company to help VCSE organisations in Greater Manchester access and benefit from the Government’s Kickstart scheme – helping to give young people the opportunity to gain vital skills and experience that will boost their employability and in turn inject the talents and energies of young people to help organisations with their recovery.

Kickstart encourages organisations to create six-month work placements for 16-24 year-olds who are at risk of long-term unemployment. The government will pay 100% of the relevant National Minimum Wage for 25 hours a week*, plus National Insurance and pension contributions. There’s also £1,500 per placement available for setup costs and training.

Employers wishing to apply directly for funding must be able to offer a minimum of 30 job placements. Many employers within the VCSE sector will not be able to provide this many placements,so we have partnered with the Growth Company to act as a ‘Gateway’, enabling employers offering less than 30 placements to access Kickstart funding.

The Growth Company will support organisations to ensure job placements are eligible and submit applications on behalf of multiple employers. They also pass on the relevant payments made by Department of Work and Pensions and can offer support with training and employability support for placed young people.

The Growth Company are also offering Kickstart employers a range of HR and ‘back office’ support to help onboard new-starters and offering on-placement support to young people. Employers will also have the option to buy wraparound support from approved locality based VCSE providers.

Kind regards

* Employers are able to top up the funding – we would encourage organisations creating Kickstart placements to ensure that wages are enhanced to meet the UK Living Wage wherever possible.
