Message from Cllr David Molyneux
New recruits join Wigan Council
As we mark National Apprenticeship Week, it was fantastic to meet and greet three new apprentices along with Councillor Paul Prescott.
Joining three weeks ago, Ben Thornborrow, of Ince, Joe Aindow, of Hawkley Hall and Seb Bradshaw of Orrell, join as roadworker apprentices and are the latest in a long line of young talent to start their journey at the council.
The apprenticeships will last around 30 months and will combine a two-year formal study with onsite practical experience.
The theme for NAW2021 is ‘Build the Future’ and aims to encourage everyone to consider how apprenticeships help individuals to build the skills and knowledge required for a rewarding career.
Providing all of our young people with the very best opportunities we can is a key priority for us. We are very proud to continue promoting apprentices and we’re delighted with the ongoing success of our apprenticeship programme.
Keeping the borough moving
It’s set to be another cold week in the borough with it temperatures forecast to drop below freezing on a number of days so we would encourage people to keep safe and exercise care if it’s essential to be out on the roads.
Our teams are on standby 24/7 throughout the season to ensure our roads are monitored and treated if required.
The winter maintenance crews have put in a fantastic effort during the last few months to keep the borough moving and the latest stats below show how we have already grit the primary network more than last winter and used more salt.
Good Trader Scheme offer
This week we want to ensure that traders and businesses are aware of a special sign up offer for the council’s Good Trader Scheme.
The network pulls together the borough’s most tried and test traders with over 185 local businesses signed up as members and we have around 35,000 residents that use the GTS website each year.
Please make residents aware that if they sign up now, there is just the £30 admin fee and no membership fees up to April 2020 – so two months free.
The latest Q+A session with Prof Kate Ardern will take place on Thursday and residents can submit questions or topics they would like to be covered via our Facebook page. This week local GP Shikha Pitalia will be joining Prof Ardern.
