Wigan Council – in partnership with local community groups – is bringing a series of activities and events as part of Our Town Live.

The summer programme of entertainment will visit 11 areas across the borough and include summer fetes, community days, live music and street entertainment.

There will also be performances from the local indie pop band The Lottery Winners who recently recorded a track with folk singer-songwriter Frank Turner and saw their second album reach number 23 in the charts.

Councillor Chris Ready, portfolio holder for communities, said: “For the first time in more than a year we are going to be able to go out into our communities and our high streets and enjoy a fun-filled summer as part of the Our Town programme.

“We really hope that everyone will be able to join us for a great day out and fun for all the family in a Covid-safe environment.”

Our Town Live is funded by the Government and the European Regional Development Fund as part of an initiative to encourage people back out into their local area in the wake of the pandemic.

Among the events will be several that could not happen last year but are now being brought back, including Shevington Fete and Ashton Summer Festival.

The first events will take place on July 31 in Market Street, Atherton, as well as at Platt Bridge in Abram. It will then move on to Ince, Shevington, Tyldesley, Standish, Ashton and Aspull among others.

Coun Ready added: “I can’t wait to see everyone going out and having fun. This funding is helping us bring our communities back together again in a safe and responsible way.

“I look forward to seeing you all there.”
