EXTRA CASH BOOST TO REPAIR ROADS

A £369,000 investment from government will give a further boost to tackle potholes in Wigan Borough. The money, announced yesterday by the Department for Transport, is in addition to the £500,000 pledged by the leader of the council, Lord Peter Smith, last month to carry out repairs to the borough’s roads after conditions have deteriorated after a cold winter.

The authority has revealed where the money allocated from the leader will be spent, with £350,000 allocated to roads and £150,000 allocated to footpaths. It has also published its indicative highways maintenance programme for 2018-2020 which includes all roads that will be resurfaced.

The teams tackling potholes across Wigan Borough have been doubled in the last few weeks in order to repair as many as possible. The council spends more than £1m maintaining 1,100km of roads and mends around 14,000 road defects, including potholes, a year.

Paul Barton, director for environment, said: “We are aware of the public concern around the number of potholes on our roads and are doing everything we can to tackle them. We welcome this extra boost of money and will now allocate it to the roads which need repairing as a priority.”
