HOWE BRIDGE COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER NUMBER 215 FEBRUARY 2020

We are now at the start of a possible new era for the Howe Bridge Community Group, several things have happened in the recent past that have impacted on the group and our activities, so, to start the year off with all of us working towards the same objectives and with the same aims and ambitions, we will be using the first meeting of the year as an ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING.

This will take place on THURSDAY FEBRUARY 13TH in the Vestry of St Michaels Church starting at 7-00pm.

The main items of the agenda will be,

ELECTION OF OFFICIALS—People will be elected who it is considered will maintain, improve and extend the present standards but will also take the group forward more progressively.

The following positions will be up for election.

CHAIRMAN

VICE CHAIRMAN

SECRETARY

TREASURER

THREE COMMITTEE MEMBERS

FUNDRAISING

At present our primary methods of raising funds are by holding  PLANT SALES during the year, A CHARITY BOWLS DAY and PUBLIC DONATIONS.

We have already lost our Winter plant sale, so, one of the group priorities is to  find ways of compensating for that lost revenue. If this money CANNOT be raised by other methods then the newly elected officials  will have to look at how money can be saved so that we will have enough funds to continue to maintain the village to its present standards.

Also, we have a system in place at present where, if another group in the village needs some financial support  we are in the position where we could help them out, but, PENDING new fundraising initiatives being implemented,  any future support would have to be curtailed quite considerably unless we can find other  ways to  continue to raise money

Regarding any future charity fundraising bowls days,  a decision will have to be made, possibly in late spring or early summer.

With regard to Public donations, we hope that these  will continue, over the years these donations have ensured that we have had sufficient funds to maintain and improve the village and we cannot emphasise how much the donated money means to Howe Bridge,

FUTURE PROJECTS

Once again Howe Bridge has been selected as one of the places that will be used by Wigan MBC for the 2020 Britain In Bloom competition, the village will again be used as the “ FLAGSHIP “ site for the judges to visit, this means that we will need to ensure that the village is in pristine condition for the judges visit, hopefully Wigan MBC will help us with some funding and assistance with preparing the various parts of the village that will be on the judging route.

With regards to In Bloom, we have received an email telling us that Tracey Williams will be leaving her job as the North West In Bloom co-ordinator for  Wigan Borough, this is a terrible blow to everyone involved with the in bloom competition in the borough, Tracey was a terrific asset, both to Wigan and to all of the in bloom groups in Wigan, she was the inspiration behind virtually all of the in bloom entries and successes for the borough and her leaving will leave a void  that will be impossible to fill.

We wish Tracey EVERY SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS in the future in whatever she chooses to do, but especially in her duties as a Judge in the  North West In Bloom competition.

An invitation will be sent to Tracey`s successor to attend a meeting of our group, hopefully this would be at our A G M. We need to know who we will be working with on the In Bloom projects.

THE WAY FORWARD FOR THE GROUP.

Decisions will have to be made with regards to how the group will progress in the immediate future and also in the years ahead.

MAJOR QUESTIONS AND ITEMS FOR DISCUSSION  would be.

DO WE CONTINUE WITH THE IN BLOOM PROJECT ????

What type of group will we be ?  will there be wholesale changes ?  What sites would we prioritise for maintenance and improvement ?

What will the membership and recruitment policy be ?

Will we have a strategy for links with “ Partners ?

Who would our preferred partners be ?  There will be opportunities to extend our present partnerships with other local groups / organisations, do we take advantage of these opportunities ?

What would our project targets be, what sites, existing projects and new sites would be maintained and / or developed ?

Whatever happens at the A G M with regard to future group policy on village maintenance, we will continue to have clean-ups, litter picks and gardening days, these will be held on most Saturday mornings and at least one Afternoon per week { dependent on weather }

There is a NATIONAL CLEAN-UP IN MARCH, but, why wait until then, come and join us and help us to keep our beautiful village clean,  litter free and with excellent and colourful floral displays. FOUR HOURS PER WEEK OVER TWO SESSIONS—THAT’S ALL IT TAKES. RING 07412 521040 IF YOU CAN HELP. ADOPT A SITE FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY TO MAINTAIN, We have the equipment, all we need is YOU.

COMPUTER REPAIRS

I recently had to have a repair done on my Laptop, so, after contacting several computer repair shops and being given ridiculously high prices for them to repair the problem I decided to take my laptop to AI Computer Repairs, Elliot Street Tyldesley, not only did they do an excellent job, when they found out that the computer was primarily used for our group and Good Deeds Trust Dementia Care Charity, the repair was done FREE OF CHARGE.

EXCELLENT SERVICE WITH EXCELLENT RESULT–THANKYOU  !!!

This draw will run alongside our weekly draw which takes place every Friday.

Over the past few weeks we have been quite busy with presentations about our fantastic scheme with varying results, we are continually being asked to  extend the scheme and we are trying to accept as many invitations as we can, although, some of them are too far away to attend, our scheme is still run by UNPAID volunteers with NO expenses paid to anyone for any reason, but, THE VOLUNTEERS DON`T WORK FOR MONEY BUT FOR THE SATISFACTION OF KNOWING THAT PEOPLE ARE BEING HELPED TO LIVE BETTER LIVES BY OUR GROUP. THIS IS PAYMENT ENOUGH
