Barking and Dagenham Council is seeking to recruit an exceptional candidate to deliver our community cohesion agenda. This person will be working across and contributing to a number of agendas with a particular focus on community cohesion and the threat, posed to it by extremism. The post will work in the Community Enterprise Team, where a number of exciting initiatives are happening.
We are looking for a charismatic, determined and confident person who has the ability and skills to engage hard to reach groups, promote community cohesion and challenge extremist ideologies. You will need to develop strong and effective partnerships particularly with grass roots community groups and demonstrate the ability to promote and empower communities and organisations/institutions to challenge all forms of extremism that undermine our fundamental values in modern day Britain. You will be required to have knowledge and experience of supporting organisations to build their capacity to deliver projects and work that build community resilience – one of the aims of the Counter-Extremism Strategy.
Candidates will therefore be expected to have good knowledge of the Government’s Counter-Extremism Strategy 2015:
You will need to demonstrate experience of working with diverse communities including hard to reach groups, promoting community cohesion and empowering communities to support themselves. You will also need to be able to advise and support organisations on accessing funds/support to enable them to consolidate and amplify their work in relation to building stronger communities and countering extremism.
You should be prepared to work occasional evenings and weekends and travel for business purposes as well as undergo enhanced security checks.
