Join Wellfest for a happier, healthier 2022

Wigan Borough’s festival celebrating all things health and happiness is returning next week.

A jam-packed programme of events will launch on Monday, January 17 with activities across the borough.

From mindfulness sessions to family cooking demos, residents are invited to join in the free activities if they’re after some health inspiration in the new year or just want to try something new in their local community.

Residents can also access Wellfest online through a virtual festival site featuring a host of videos, articles and blogs, from healthy family recipes to free home workouts.

Wigan Council, its health partners, community groups and some special guests have joined forces for the two-week event which will focus on mental health in line with the council’s Be Kind campaign.

Councillor Keith Cunliffe, deputy leader at the council, said: “Now, more than ever, we need to be kind to ourselves and to each other. We know January can be tough for people, and of the most important things you can do is look after your own physical and mental wellbeing.

“Wellfest gives people the chance to try something new and to meet other people in their communities. If you’re feeling isolated or want to make a healthy change to your lifestyle this year but don’t know where to start, please have a look at what’s on offer and get involved. The support is out there.

“The online resource brings a whole host of information together about looking after your health and happiness which can be accessed at home at the click of a button.”

The online festival site will go live on Monday 17th January at www.wigan.gov.uk/wellfest

Residents and families can browse each of the festival tents online – including the healthy tent, happy tent and family tent, which will be packed with ideas to help you eat well, information and support to look after your mind and advice for the whole family or new parents.

Free family cooking sessions:

Learn how to make crowd-pleasing, cheap, easy, healthy food for your tribe. No need to book just turn up. There will be a free goody bag to take away with the ingredients to try the recipes at home.

  • Thursday 20th January: Tyldesley Startwell Centre: 9.30am and 1.30pm
  • Tuesday 25th January: Atherton Laburnum Rovers Football Club: 9.30am and 1.30pm
  • Friday 29th January: Platt Bridge Startwell Centre: 9.30am and 1.30pm

Library sessions: 

Golborne in bloom – community clean up with planting, sprucing up the local area – 20th and 27th – Golborne library

  • Tuesday 18th January: Wigan Library: Knitted Bless – learn something new and meet new people: 10.30am
  • Thursday 20th January: Ashton Library: Mindfulness session – relax after work and learn some key mindfulness tips: 5.30pm
  • Thursday 20th January: Golborne Library: Community clean up
  • Saturday 22nd January: Ashton Library: Open mic poetry sessions with local poet Louise Fazackerley
  • Tuesday 25th January: Platt Bridge Library: Mental resilience session with author Alex Winstanley: 4pm
