|New testing site|
The council is opening a second lateral flow testing site at Golborne Library tomorrow (Tuesday).
It will initially be available for council key workers with a view to expanding to support local partners and businesses soon.
The first testing site in Leigh is already up and running. This increased capacity for testing our frontline staff will make a big impact for our teams and help us maintain business continuity.
|Development and air quality SPD|
A new supplementary planning document has been created and residents and developers are being asked to give their comments.
The SPD is aimed at managing the air quality impact of new developments in Wigan Borough.
The guidance will provide clarity to applicants and will guide planners on how to assess schemes more effectively.
|Cold weather alert|
The Met Office has issued a cold weather alert with a very high probability of severe cold/icy conditions forecast.
Please take extra care and advise residents to be vigilant particularly if they have to travel by car.
Our Winter Maintenance team will be carrying out a precautionary treatment of our priority network routes and as always will continue to monitor the forecast throughout the night.
|Novavax publishes positive efficacy data for its coronavirus vaccine|
Novavax, on Friday, announced that its vaccine has shown to be 89% effective in preventing coronavirus in participants, as well as showing efficacy against new UK variant.

|Secondary school and college testing programme|
Following new advice, NHS Test and Trace and Public Health England have temporarily paused the need for secondary schools and colleges to carry out a confirmatory Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test following a positive result with a Lateral Flow Test (LFT).
Following a positive Lateral Flow Test result taken at school or college, an individual will need to self-isolate in line with government guidance, and contact tracing will need to be undertaken. It will also be the trigger for self-isolation payments.
In line with clinical advice, confirmatory PCR testing will remain in place for primary school staff as testing is done at home
