Chance to win EURO tickets
Do you know someone who deserves a seat at this year’s UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 tournament? If you, or the person you’re nominating, lives in Wigan Borough, you could be in with a chance of winning up to four tickets to the quarter-final match being held at Leigh Sports Village on Saturday 23rd July.

Vaccination information

A fantastic 625,693 Covid-19 vaccinations have now been given out in Wigan Borough.

If you are over 16 and haven’t had your vaccinations yet, please come forward as soon as you can.

If you are over 18 you can now also book your booster vaccination. 

You can use the NHS website to book your own vaccination appointments or call a new helpline run by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service in partnership with the NHS.

The helpline number is 0161 608 4304 and the line is open Monday to Friday, 8am–6pm.

If you can no longer attend your vaccination appointment, please make sure you cancel it. This means the slot can be used by someone else.

Wear a face covering in public indoor spaces and on public transportWash your hands regularly
Watch your distance from others
Take a lateral flow test before you go out to meet others. Isolate if you get a positive result.

This week’s Covid-19 tracker for the borough has been published

It shows:The rate of new cases in Wigan Borough is higher than last week
Wigan Borough has the highest rate of new cases in Greater Manchester for the latest complete week (25 – 31 December).
Wigan Borough currently has the 4th highest total rate in GM.
Wigan Borough is currently ranked 5th in England.
The over-60’s weekly incidence rate for Wigan Borough is the second highest of the 10 Greater Manchester areas.
Wigan Borough is higher than the Greater Manchester and the North West average for rate of new cases in the latest 7 days.
As at 4 January, there were 79 COVID-positive patients in Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh hospitals, an increase from this time last week.
The ten Directors of Public Health in Greater Manchester have released a joint statement regarding the Omicron variant, encouraging residents to get their booster jobs.

Would you like to learn a new skill or gain qualifications that will help you with future employment or further education?

Wigan Adult Learning and Skills offer a range of FREE courses* to Wigan Borough residents aged 19 and over.

Learn in community-based venues across the borough

Time tabled around school hours

Courses include Functional Skills, English/Maths, Teaching Assistant, Health & Social Care, Business Admin and many more.

*Most courses are FREE, however there is an eligibility criteria for some courses.

For courses starting from January, you can attend an Advice and Enrolment Event and chat to the friendly tutors about the range of courses on offer and how to get started – it’s never too late to update your skills and qualifications.

Remember to apply for your child’s primary school place
There’s just over a week left to apply for your child’s primary school place if you need to.

If your child turns 4 between 1 September 2021 and 31 August 2022, they will start primary school later this year.

You will need to apply for their place at primary school before 15 January 2022.

Electoral boundary review
The next stage of the local government boundary review process for Wigan Borough is underway. 

A public consultation on draft recommendations is now open until February 7, 2022, independently overseen by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England (LGBCE).

You will be aware from the previous stage that the LGBCE has proposed keeping the current set-up of 75 councillors across 25 wards.

The latest stage proposes boundary changes for a number of wards.
