My Wigan Borough Updates

Prime Minister announces anticipated date for schools to re-open

This week the Prime Minister announced that he hopes schools can begin fully re-opening again from 8th March.

The date is based on it being three weeks from the 15th February, the date by which the NHS hope to have vaccinated all four of the most vulnerable groups of people, meaning those who have had the vaccination will have had time to develop immunity.

The Prime Minister will confirm the date in the week starting 22nd February, following the Spring half term. To keep up to date on the plans for schools click here

Covid-19 Vaccination Update
Over 27,500 vaccines (up to 24th January) have already been given to people from priority groups in the borough.

Hollowood Chemist on Mesnes Street in Wigan has become the first pharmacy to offer Covid-19 vaccinations in the borough.

The addition of the pharmacy means that we now have five vaccination centres in the borough with one at Robin Park in Wigan and others in Leigh, Golborne and Hindley.

You may be invited to have a vaccination at a location outside of the borough. If so, you are welcome to take up this offer if you wish to.

If you would rather wait for a local appointment, that’s fine too.

Your GP will be in touch as soon as it is your turn.

If you’ve already had your vaccination, please remember that it is still possible for you to spread the virus between other people.

Please take care and wear a mask when out and about (unless exempt), watch your space between yourself and others and wash your hands frequently.

Covid-19 tracker

This week’s Covid-19 tracker has been published. It shows: The rate of new cases has decreased in Wigan Borough over the last week and is lower than the regional rates.

The new variant still accounts for the majority of new cases locally.

Wigan has the 3rd highest rate of new cases in Greater Manchester.

Please continue to wash your hands, wear a face covering and watch your distance.

Be Aware of Vaccination Scams

The Covid-19 vaccinations are free. There is no need to apply for your vaccination, you will be contacted when it is your turn.
You will never be asked to pay for your vaccination, and you will not be asked for your bank details.
