A state-of-the-art care home for people with dementia in Wigan Borough has been completed and is the first of its kind.

Worthington Lake, in Standish, is a highly specialised home created specifically so residents with dementia can retain independence and live a happy, healthy life.

It is the first home in Greater Manchester and Lancashire to have attained the coveted Stirling University Gold accreditation for excellence in dementia design principles making it amongst one of ten in the UK.

The design of Worthington Lake has been created to specifically empower its residents to retain independence through the involvement in their daily routine, unrestricted access to secure outdoor sensory spaces and supervised kitchen facilities so that residents can be actively involved in the preparation of their own food.

Operator Millennium Care UK has been working closely with Wigan Council and cabinet member for health and adult social care, Cllr Keith Cunliffe, placed the final brick on the building to mark its completion in June.

Cllr Cunliffe said: “Through The Deal we are transforming the way we care for residents and putting them at the heart of everything we do.

“We now have a world class building and a centre of excellence that we can be proud of.

“We are thrilled to see the opening of such a unique home in the borough.

“Getting the right housing for residents is such a crucial element to them being able to lead a happy, healthy life.”

Steve Fishwick Director of Cranberry construction said “I’ve worked with Millennium care UK for over 20 years now, we at Cranberry construction are very proud to be associated with Millennium care, the level of detail in the design of Worthington Lake just shows the passion they have for dementia design and getting the most out of a building for the end user.

“Worthington Lake has been an exciting project from the start and I have been the main contact throughout the build process, I can safely say this is the next step in dementia care, I have worked on many care homes in my time but nothing to this level, Worthington Lake is the future in dementia design.”
