A short breaks service for children and young people with complex needs has been rated Outstanding by Ofsted once again.

It’s the eighth year Ladies Lane, based in Hindley, has been given the top judgement with inspectors praising the “exceptional short-break care” on offer.

The home, ran by Wigan Council, provides overnight breaks to children and young people with severe learning difficulties and complex needs, catering for ages eight to 18.

It is purpose built and provides variety of aids and adaptations to meet individual needs with the service on offer 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Ofsted judged the home as outstanding in all three aspects; overall experiences and progress of young people, how well children and young people are protected and the effectiveness of leaders and managers.

The report says: “This home continues to provide exceptional short-break care for young people who have complex needs and disabilities. This is underpinned by a consistent staff team, whose members are highly motivated and passionate about the care they provide. They speak with pride about the work they do and place a great focus on promoting young people’s outcomes and experiences”.

Staff were highly commended with the inspector noting: “Staff pride themselves on getting to know each young person. Detailed care plans guide staff in addressing any challenging behavior in a consistent and positive way”.

As part of the inspection one parent said: “I can’t fault it, my daughter thrives, she smiles when she is going to stay, the staff are so kind-hearted”.

The Ofsted inspector also wrote a letter to the children and young people who stay at the home, writing: “I saw from your memory lane books and the beautiful photographs how much you enjoyed your time here. Your confidence is growing, and everyone is so very proud of you. Well done!”

Councillor Jenny Bullen, cabinet member for children and young people at Wigan Council, said: “It is absolutely fantastic to see how our children and young people are being supported at Ladies Lane. The care and support they receive is first-class.

“The staff are highly skilled with substantial experience and their passion for what they do shines through when you see them with the young people. They build relationships with families and get to know each child.

“Having a short break at Ladies Lane not only supports families but gives young people a sense of independence, and helps to encourage self-help skills. Young people have the opportunity to meet new friends and take part in various outings.

“It is a brilliant outcome once again for them with this rating.”
