A COMMUNITY group plans to take over a former library building and offer a range of activities for residents.

Atherton Community Trust (ACT), an umbrella organisation for existing groups in the town, is hoping to run the Atherton Centre on York Street. The town’s library relocated to the neighbouring refurbished Atherton Town Hall, which offers multiple services and was opened in December.

Wigan Council is currently inviting groups to register an interest through a community asset transfer with a deadline set for Tuesday, February 5

ACT hope to introduce facilities for art, a youth zone, theatre, education and support for veterans that caters for people of all ages.

The group held a meeting at “The Bridge” at Dorset Road Community Centre last week to discuss its proposals for the site. Bolton West and Atherton MP Chris Green, Leigh MP Jo Platt, councillors, local authority staff, community group members and business owners were in attendance.

ACT chairman Norman Bradbury estimates it will cost £65,000 a year to run the venue and the group is making efforts to raise funds. He reserved praised for the Atherton Library Support Group, including member Mabel Jones, after it donated £1,000 to ACT.

ACT is comprised of groups such as The New Garrett Hall Theatre, Heart Atherton, the Atherton Carnival and Hag Fold Community Committee, Atherton Library Support Group, Ena Mill, Atherton Business Partnership and veterans groups.
