Plant-based goodness

January is a time of opportunity for many, as people take time to reflect on the year just passed and think about how they can become happier and healthier.

One initiative that has grown in popularity in recent years is Veganuary – where people challenge themselves to go plant-based for a whole month.

As well as being good for your health, changing your diet – even slightly – can have a big impact on our planet and having a focus can help you to beat the January blues.

You might be wondering why there is the need for us to make these changes.

In the last fifty years the human population has increased dramatically.

With this, more intensive and unsustainable farming methods are being used around the world, having a catastrophic impact on our climate and the natural world.

While this is a global issue, in Wigan borough we can play our own part in tackling this crisis by considering the food we eat and where it comes from.

By looking at how our food is produced, buying only what we need, and reducing the amount of food we throw away we can reduce our footprint on the world.

Small actions add up to make a big change.

You could begin by incorporating plant-based meals into your existing diet, sourcing locally grown food or dedicating one day each week to going meat free.
Another easy switch is making your snacks and lunches plant-based.

If the cost of fresh foods is a barrier for you, consider buying tinned and frozen fruit and vegetables which are relatively cheap and last longer than fresh produce.

It can be simple too – all it takes it blending this up to make a delicious fruit smoothie!

There are lots of tasty foods you can eat and taking on this new challenge is a great opportunity to come together as a family to make and try new foods.

And if you aren’t feeling confident enough to cook, why not check out our borough’s newest vegan eatery and support local at the same time?

Atu, situated on Market Street in Wigan, will be happy to welcome you (and your taste buds will leave happy too.)

Wherever you are in your journey – whether you’re already a plant-based champion or you’re just thinking of dipping your toes into the world of plant-based goodness – there’s no better time to begin.
