Nominations have opened for Wigan Borough’s 2018 Believe Sports Awards.

The prestigious annual event is a chance to shine a spotlight on those volunteers, coaches and clubs passionate about local sport, as well as celebrating the achievements of local athletes – all wrapped up in a special ceremony organised by Inspiring healthy lifestyles on behalf of Wigan Council.

Whether you want to recognise a blossoming young sporting career like Danni Williams who picked up the 2017 Sports Achiever of the Year at just 13 years of age or someone like the amazing Steven Johnson who took control of his life by losing six stone in six months and was promptly awarded the Changing Lifestyle Recognition Award, you can at the 2018 Believe Sports Awards.

There’s also a new category being introduced this year. Wigan Council Deal Community Programme of the Year is for groups that demonstrate how a community activity has had a positive impact on getting Wigan Borough residents out, active, and engaged in their local community in support of improved physical and mental health and wellbeing.

This year’s ceremony will take place at the DW Stadium on Friday 12th October, and nominations can be made by filling in the online form at

Lynsey Johnson, Head of Wellbeing for Inspiring healthy lifestyles said: “We know, from our day-to-day work in the community that there are so many wonderful individuals, team and groups of people who deserve to be recognised and we’d encourage anyone who knows someone like this to take the time to nominate them. “It’s extremely important to recognise inspirational people who are making such a valuable contribution to sport every day of the year. “The Believe Sports Awards provides an opportunity to give them the recognition they deserve and celebrate the talent being developed at grassroots level.”
