Award winning local sports champions have been honoured by the Mayor of Wigan Borough at a special reception.
Councillor Sue Greensmith welcomed winners of the 2018 Believe Sports Awards to the mayor’s parlour to celebrate their achievements on Thursday 17th January.
Eight of the winners from the Wigan event later entered the Greater Manchester Sports Awards in November 2018 with Sally Skellern winning the Greater Manchester title for the Changing Lifestyle award.
Sally is a police officer who endured multiple injuries through her work leading to numerous lengthy operations and procedures which caused extreme weakness in her body and pain.
During her recovery period she gained weight but, determined to do something about it, joined Howe Bridge Leisure Centre and is now off all medication, attends regular classes and hits personal bests on a weekly basis.
All of the borough’s 2018 Believe Sports Awards winners were invited to the mayor’s parlour, where they were thanked for all their hard work, dedication and commitment.
The Mayor of Wigan Borough, Cllr Sue Greensmith, said: “It was an honour to meet the winners and to celebrate their outstanding contributions to sports in the borough.
“We have a great sporting track record in the borough and are so proud of the volunteers, coaches and rising sports stars who are paving the way for more sports success in the future.”
The 2019 Believe Sports Awards will take place in October and nominations will open at the end of March.
The event is organised by leisure partner Inspiring healthy lifestyles on behalf of Wigan Council.
Gareth Cross, Chair of Inspiring healthy lifestyles Board of Trustees, said: “There are some amazing individuals and teams striving to be the best in their chosen sport but there are also many groups and individuals who give up their time and effort to volunteer and ensure sport in the community happens week in week out.
“If you know someone who deserves to be recognised please do make this year the year you nominate them.”
