Wigan and Leigh Charity, The Brick, is inviting people to join them in the Big Back Garden Sleep, on Friday 24 April, to raise much-needed funds for the charity’s food bank.

There has been an unprecedented demand for the charity’s services, in particular, the Brick’s Wigan town centre foodbank, since the outbreak of the COVID-19 crisis. In the last 3 weeks, there has been a 295% increase in demand for food parcels overall, and the charity has recorded a 348% increase in the need for food parcels for children.

The Brick’s donated food bank stock has decreased by 73% since the start of the crisis last month. This has been due, in the main, to the closure of the charity’s Wigan and Leigh retail shops and the end of fundraising initiatives from the charity’s many supporters; all income streams used to sustain the food bank.

To raise much-needed funds for the food bank and the Charity, The Brick is asking people to come together on Friday 24 April for the Big Back Garden Sleep. Whether people want to camp out in their back garden, sleep on their trampolines or create a den in their lounge, the community are invited to join The Brick to raise as much money as they can for those in the community who are facing poverty.

Louise Green, CEO at The Brick, said: “We had planned to hold our annual Sleep Out in Wigan town centre on Friday April 24, but due to the current crisis we have had to cancel the event. This event was not only a key date in our calendar for fundraising, but was a date that families, friends, and businesses look forward to, to come together to raise money for those in our community who need our help, the most.

“We wanted to create a new event, in keeping with the current circumstances, where everyone can join us, from their gardens and homes, to help us to raise money for our food bank. One food parcel costs £15 and to feed a family of 4 for a week, the cost is £45. So, if everyone who joins us can donate enough to feed a family of 4, they are helping to feed people in our community who are facing poverty, right now.”

To join the Brick’s Big Back Garden Sleep, people can register their interest on the charity’s Facebook page where there will be a range of activities provided for those taking part, including scavenger hunts, sleepout recipes and campfire songs.
