Last Friday evening, 5th October, our President, Janet Reynolds, welcomed Presidents from 18 societies and 44 visitors to The Thistle Society’s Presidents & Visitors Night at Culcheth Sports Club as well as 24 of our own members. The evening passed quickly as we danced to the lively Scottish dance music provided by Ian Slater. There was an excellent programme of jigs, reels and strathspeys, easy ones and slightly more difficult ones for all to enjoy. Refreshment time and a tasty hotpot was served followed by a choice of gateau, tea or coffee. As the evening drew to a close the happy dancers joined in Auld Lang Syne.

The Society look forward to the St Andrew’s Night at the end of November where we  dancing, have a few words about and a toast to St Andrew, followed by an enjoyable plate of haggis, tatties and neeps.  In December we have a Jacob’s Join party night on 17th, which is also the last evening of the year.

As we return on 10th January 2019 there are only a couple of weeks before we celebrate our Burns Night Supper on Friday 25th. It is a great traditional evening with a three course meal, where the Haggis is piped in, speeches (not too long) and entertainment. This is followed by dancing with old time as well as Scottish dancing so that everyone can join in. Why not think about coming and joining us? Posters with information will be about in December.

The Thistle Society meet each Monday evening at St Theresa’s Catholic Church Hall, College Road, Upholland WN8 0PY. Tuition is provided for new and less experienced dancers between 7.00pm and 8.00pm, with dancing for everyone from 8.00pm till 10.15pm.  We are happy for children with a parent, young people, anyone who feels they might like to have a try just to come along and have a go. It is free the first night and if you should decide to stay there is an annual membership fee and £2 weekly subs. shoes with soft flexible soles are needed – trainers are not really suitable.
