With lockdown rules eased Wigan Rotary Club realised some community groups had started thinking about restarting their meetings after several months of being unable to see friends and colleagues. However there was concern regarding the number of members who would be willing to return without reassurance regarding their safety and the cost of providing it which would involve purchasing items such as hand sanitisers, anti- bacterial wipes, masks etc.
Wigan Rotary Club immediately launched a socially distanced ‘Dragons Den’ style event for groups looking for a donation to purchase items such as those mentioned above.
As a result eleven local groups ranging from football clubs, brownies and gardening clubs have been given a donation to help them with the cost of purchasing the items they need. The lucky groups were:
ACE £78 ;
AGE UK- £100:
Brighter Orrell -£100;
SHEVINGTON GARDENING CLUB- £75;
ST MATTHEWS BROWNIES – £100;
YOUNG PERSONS CENTRE – £100;
WIGAN ROVERS AFC – £100 ;
BISPHAM METHODISTS – £100;
ST. AIDAN’S BROWNIES – £100;
WIGAN COSMOS F.C. – £100
Wigan Rotary President Rosemary Charles said ’I am delighted we have been able to help these organisations in their arrangements to meet safely and securely’. She continued ‘‘however this initiative would not have been possible without the generous donations of the Wigan residents especially last December when we accompanied Santa and his sleigh around the area.’
